The Nineveh Plain Protection Units
The Nineveh Plain Protection Units were established in 2014 by local Assyrian residents of the Nineveh Plain after the invasion of Mosul and the Nineveh Plain by the Islamic State. Since the local inhabitants of the Nineveh Plains were actively disarmed by Kurdish Peshmerga soldiers two weeks before the invasion, and were abandoned by both Kurdish Peshmerga and Iraqi Army soldiers as the Islamic State advanced, it now incumbent on Chaldeans, Syriacs, and other Christian Assyrians in the Nineveh Plain to take their protection into their own hands.
After the formation of the Nineveh Plain Protection Units in Iraq, the Assyrian Democratic Movement became its political sponsor within the Government of Iraq. In March, 2016, the Nineveh Plain Protection Units officially joined the Nineveh Liberation Operation Command, the campaign being led by the Government of Iraq to defeat the Islamic State and liberate Nineveh and other occupied territories. The NPU is the only Assyrian force officially authorized under the Nineveh Liberation Operation Command to operate in the Nineveh Plain as its own force, and all of the NPU’s full-time guards are constituted strictly by local inhabitants of the Nineveh Plain.
Our Noble Mission
The liberation of Nineveh represents our last chance to claim our indigenous right to live freely in our ancestral lands.
- First, the NPU shall participate in the liberation of Nineveh so as to secure towns and villages historically populated by Chaldeans, Syriacs, and other Christian Assyrians.
- Second, the NPU shall ensure the long-term safety of these Assyrian lands for resettlement and repatriation of Assyrians to the Nineveh Plain.
- Third, the NPU strengthens our political claim to normalize control and jurisdiction of the Nineveh Plain in the favor of independent Assyrians who wish to maximize their autonomy. Our long-term goal is the creation of a new Nineveh Province separate of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and equal to other provinces under the Government of Iraq. We believe that only thru a separate Nineveh Plain Province independent of the KRG may Assyrians realize their potential as free and equal citizens of the Government of Iraq.
